The first opportunity any homeowner has to save money is during the design and planning stages. Through space planning and intelligent design, B&G American Contractors can help you implement design efficiencies that will result in optimum natural heating and cooling, reducing energy needs and ultimately expenses.

Considering how fragile the economy is right now one of the most frequently asked questions from our customers is "How they can save money building their new home?" If you're set on building a new home there are still many ways you can keep your cost down, which will make the banks more likely to fund your project. Luckily for consumers, the prices of home building products are dramatically reduced as manufacturers compete during a down market. B&G American Contractors team of architects, designers and builders would like to share their insight and experience on ways to help you save money while building your new home.

Here is a list of our top tips for saving money on new home construction:

-Buying the right piece of land could save you a lot of money when you build your new house. Before you buy your land make sure that the land can be built on without excessive expenses like blasting rock, access to drinking water and proper sewage treatment.

-The type of house you select can be one of the easiest ways for you to save money. For example, it is generally more cost-effective to build a two-story home, rather than a ranch. You wouldn't think so, but if your take a 3,000 sq. ft. ranch plan versus a 3,000 sq. ft two-story home the ranch will have a foundation and roof that is twice the size of the two-story. Another benefit is that a two-story home can easily fit on a small or sloped lot. By simply choosing a two-story house plan, you could save anywhere from $10,000 to $20,000 in construction costs without losing any livable space.

-Using recycled building materials will help you save money.

-Energy Efficient Green Building:

Kitchens:

·      Select EnergyStar rated appliances: Kitchen appliances that have received the EnergyStar rating of approval meet the highest  standards of energy efficiency.

·      Install florescent lighting: The lights in your kitchen are used more than any other room in the house. By installing florescent lighting,  you will reduce your electricity costs to keep your kitchen looking bright.

·      Seal the windows: Many modern kitchens have large windows or patio doors that lead onto the backyard or deck. By ensuring these  windows are properly calked and sealed, you will prevent the warm kitchen air from escaping outside.

Bathrooms:

·      Install low-flow showerheads: Reducing your water consumption through the use of energu efficient low-flow shower heads could save  you several hundred dollars each year.

·      Install low-flow toilets: They are designed to use much less water than a conventional toilet.

·      Install proper ventilation: This will help eliminate humidity that will contribute to the build-up of mold and cause you problems later.

Lighting:

·      Install compact florescent light bulbs: They require less energy and last ten times longer than regular incandescent bulbs.

·      Install a programmable light switch: This will allow you to turn off the lights even if you don’t make it home in time to do it yourself.

·      Install motion sensors: No need to keep that porch light on when no one is home. A motion sensor will light up the way for you when  you arrive.
